Selknam Magic Stone with Elements
Hand-painted stone, acrylic paints, recycled fur, earthenware chunk tiles, natural seeds, small branches.
15" x 9" x 2.75"
The colors are inspired by the Selknam limited palette. Anthropologist Anne Chapman wrote that they painted their bodies in dark red, black, white and at times also ochre. Red and ochre came from soil, black from coal and white from grinding shells -all pigments were mixed with animal grease.
