Selknam Magic Stones Details and Close-ups
2016-2017
Hand-painted stones collected regionally and in every trip to other areas of the US and abroad, man-made and varied natural elements including wood sticks, varied bones, recycled fur, animal teeth, acrylic paints, oil base paints, resins.
Varied
The colors are inspired by the Selknam limited palette. Anthropologist Anne Chapman wrote that they painted their bodies in dark red, black, white and at times also ochre. Red and ochre came from soil, black from coal and white from grinding shells -all pigments were mixed with animal grease.
